Why Your Seeds Don’t Germinate (And How to Fix It)

One of the most common frustrations in gardening is simple:

You plant seeds… and nothing happens.

Or only a few come up.
Or they sprout, then quickly fail.

Most people assume the problem is the seeds themselves — old seeds, poor quality, low viability.

And sometimes, that’s true.

But more often, the real problem isn’t the seed.

It’s the conditions around it.

Gardening shouldn’t feel like guesswork.


Germination Isn’t Random

Seeds don’t fail without a reason.

For a seed to germinate well, a few basic things need to be in balance:

  • Moisture
  • Air (oxygen)
  • Temperature
  • Light (depending on the seed)

If one of these is off — even slightly — germination becomes uneven, delayed, or unreliable.

The challenge is that most traditional seed-starting methods make it hard to keep these things balanced consistently.

Especially in real life.

Because real life isn’t perfect.

You miss a watering window.
The room temperature shifts.
The compost dries out too fast — or stays wet too long.

And the seeds struggle.


The Problem With “Standard” Advice

A lot of common advice sounds simple:

“Keep the soil moist.”
“Use good compost.”
“Give them light.”

But in practice, this often leads to two extremes:

  • Compost drying out too quickly
  • Compost staying too wet for too long

Both can stop seeds from germinating.

Too dry → seeds don’t activate
Too wet → seeds rot or suffocate

What many people don’t realise is that seeds need oxygen just as much as they need water.

When compost stays constantly wet, air is pushed out of it.

And without enough oxygen, seeds struggle — or fail completely.


Why Compost Matters More Than You Think

Another common issue is the type of compost being used.

It seems logical to use rich, nutrient-heavy compost right from the start.

But for many seeds, that actually works against them.

In my own growing, I’ve consistently seen better germination in lighter, finer compost.

Because rich compost can:

  • Hold too much moisture
  • Be too strong for early growth
  • Create unstable conditions for germination

At the same time, once a seed germinates, it quickly needs nutrients to grow properly.

So you end up with a conflict:

Seeds need gentle conditions to start.
Seedlings need stronger support to continue.


A Simple Fix: Two Layers, Two Purposes

This is where a small adjustment makes a big difference.

When I prepare my seed snails, I use two layers:

  • Top layer: light, fine seed-starting compost
  • Bottom layer: richer compost

This gives the seed a gentle place to begin.

Then, as roots develop, they naturally grow downwards into the richer layer below.

No early transplanting.
No guessing timing.
No forcing the process.

The plant does the work itself.

And the results are noticeably better:

  • More even germination
  • Stronger early growth
  • More stable seedlings


The Hidden Cause: Overwatering

Even when seeds germinate, many seedlings fail shortly after.

One of the most common reasons is overwatering.

It’s easy to think more water means better growth.

But roots need two things:

  • Water
  • Oxygen

If the compost stays too wet, oxygen disappears from the root zone.

And when that happens:

  • Roots weaken
  • Growth slows
  • Seedlings collapse

Most of the time, this isn’t because you’re doing something wrong.

It’s because the setup is working against you.


How to Water Without Guessing

In the early stage, moisture at the surface matters.

You can lightly mist or cover to hold humidity.

But once seeds have germinated, the focus should change.

Stop focusing on the surface.
Start focusing on the roots.

Bottom watering helps encourage roots to grow downwards in search of moisture.

That one shift can lead to:

  • Stronger root systems
  • Less risk of rot
  • More resilient plants

It’s not about doing more.

It’s about working with the plant.


Why Structure Matters

The structure of the Seed Snail method helps create a more balanced environment from the start.

The thin compost layer allows better airflow.
The rolled shape holds moisture without drowning the roots.
The compact form warms quickly and uses very little space.

It supports the seedling — even when care isn’t perfect.

If your seeds aren’t germinating, it doesn’t automatically mean:

  • The seeds are bad
  • You’re doing something wrong

Often, it’s simply a mismatch between what the seed needs… and the conditions it’s given.

Once you improve those conditions — even slightly — things start to change.

Better germination.
Stronger roots.
Healthier plants.
